We return back to New England and decided to hit up a town up in the North Shore with the esteemed title of “Carriage Centre of the World”. So much that you see carriage images on the Amesbury street signs. If you go back to 1890, city comprised over 10,000 shops and factories making wagons and carriages.
Another mural is this one honoring John Greenleaf Whittier, famous poet and abolitionist
On the side of whimsical, keep an eye out on the ground for painted crosswalks like this one titled Jay Walker Meets Cross Walker:
Fuller building was a unique property that had been in the same family for 100 years. Believed to have sold menswear.
The building here used to be called The Old Post, it served as the post office for the city. Now it is just private office space.
Here you have the town hall, of course there are logos of carriages next to the name!!
For those that know I am fascinated by the many standing street clocks you find in many downtowns. In Amesbury you find several belonging to the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank. It occupies a portion of an 18th century mill building that very likely manufactured nails, using the river’s power to run the machinery.
Speaking of mills, this is the entrance to the Millyard complex. It encompasses a group of mill buildings used for textile making. It’s been now transformed to a a park straddling the Powow River and complete with fine restaurants including Flatbread which has many locations but this is the one that started them all.
Apparently there is a great brewery in town but closes at 6 pm and I was too late. Its named Brewery Silvaticus and property is within an old millwork factory easily identifiable by the smokestack.
From behind the building you still get good views of the Powow river
Just means I will have to visit again 😊
