So I enter Tilton, one of the busiest in the southern part of the Lakes Region. I am greeted by a marble statue of an Indian queen, pillar that reads Tilton and of course the Tilton Town Hall built in 1879
Below is where the town lies a map of the NH Lakes Region:
Tilton itself owes its namesake to the Tilton family of the same name. Charles Tilton made his fortune supplying goods to miners during the California gold rush and later in real estate, banking and railroad. From his wealth donated several statues to the town like the one in the first photo of the Indian queen. Tilton was incorporated as a separate town in 1869, it was formerly the southern part of Sanbornton known as Sanbornton Bridge or Bridge Village.
One of the most marvelous contributions by the family is the 55 ft Memorial Arch. It was inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome. Originally designated to be a tombstone for Charles Tilton but wishes was rebuffed and it remained just a monument. Also land where it stands was supposed to become part of Tilton but is instead in Northfield. What a double whammy for the Tilton family!!
Another statue you will find is this one. In what appears as crowned woman leaning against a horse:
The only reason I slipped into town is for grub and I had intel about a Vietnamese spot called V’s Sandwiches. It is within this block below:
It is run by a husband and wife pair that put their life into it. Service was slow since they do all the work themselves but its worth the wait. I ordered the Lemongrass Tofu sandwich and veggie rolls:
Back to the tour now I find another statue and this one is called the Soldier’s Monument
Not too far from it I notice a railyard with a bunch of traditional trains parked outside of it. You will see names such as the Union Pacific and Bangor and Aroostook. You can find a more comprehensive survey of the trains from this Flickr account. The structure behind was used for freight back in the day but today it serves as a function hall
For those that know me, I tend to hit up a brewery when I visit a new town. No exception here, I found me Kettlehead Brewing Company:
The space is large and has outdoor seating as you can see. What I liked best about is that you can order a 4 oz for as little as $3
